Channel Manager and iCal: differences and limitations

iCal is a format used to share calendar events between systems. In hospitality, it allows exchange of occupied or blocked periods via a calendar link. It is not equivalent to a full Channel Manager connection and should not be presented as instant updates of prices and bookings.

What does iCal synchronise?

Importing a calendar allows the receiving system to read events published by the other system. The data transferred and reading frequency depend on the services used. Do not assume the link includes rates, restrictions, payments or all guest data.

What is the difference compared to a Channel Manager?

A Channel Manager for hotels A Channel Manager coordinates availability and rates on supported channels through available integrations. An iCal calendar mainly communicates occupancy periods. The actual functions of each connection should be verified with the provider and portal.

Does synchronisation always prevent overbooking?

No. There can be a delay between event creation and its import. If the same accommodation is sold on multiple portals, this window can allow overlapping bookings. Even with a Channel Manager, correct configuration of rooms, availability and connections is needed: the risk is reduced, not eliminated.

What to check before choosing?

• Which data are imported and exported.
• How often the calendar is updated.
• How changes, cancellations and manual blocks are managed.
• Which portals offer a supported direct connection.
